Climbing is a great deal of fun. It is an adventurous pastime that lets you get out in the open and do something both challenging and enjoyable. But there are far more benefits to climbing than it just being fun and exciting.
Climbing is a great form of exercise and one that doesn’t just serve to help people lose weight, but instead gives an all-over body workout, expending huge amounts of calories whilst also greatly toning every muscle group. On top of this, it will improve co-ordination, balance and flexibility, so whilst you will no doubt get far stronger, far quicker than with most other forms of exercise, you are greatly improving many other physical aspects in the process.
Getting that climbing equipment out isn’t just about physical improvement though. Problem solving and mental awareness will also be given a workout, whilst the simple act of putting on the right outdoor clothing and heading for a craggy outreach with friends can also serve to increase team work, friendship and a sense of unity.
It can also be very competitive. For those who like competition, donning the right climbing gear and trying to beat records or take on others in dedicated contests can be extremely gratifying. The mental and physical exertion involved makes it a contest that is not just about strength or wile, but instead about a combination of many different attributes, making such a contest far more rewarding.
However, for most, it is not about beating others, but instead about self-improvement. It is about working with others rather than against them. And whilst any sport can get you fit, very few can do it in such beautiful and unique surroundings, getting you back to nature and taking you away from the rat race.
So with just the right outdoor clothes and the right people around you, climbing could well be far more beneficial than you ever realised.
