For example, when shopping for gifts, choose wisely, and go for quality not quantity. A good rule of thumb for children is a main gift supported by a few little ones for fun. And why not get them into the habit of helping you tidy up all the wrapping paper afterwards?

When it comes to cooking, consult online recipes and cooking magazines in order to do as much as possible in advance. Don’t even think about making your own Christmas pudding. Use lots of fresh herbs and have lots of wine on hand and the Christmas dinner will go off with a bang.

When it comes to decor, forget about tacky one-use-only Christmas lights. Why not buy Christmas lights that you love, such as good quality fairy lights, that give off a gentle glow and that can be brought out again next year.

Tasteful fairy lights are easy, atmospheric and inexpensive. And you should keep these three qualities in mind when considering every aspect of your Christmas planning.
